Kingstone Press Championship: Round-up

Kingstone Press Championship: Round-up

Hull Kingston Rovers recovered from their first Kingstone Press Championship defeat of the season on Easter Monday, as they beat Rochdale Hornets 24-16 yesterday.

Rochdale took a 16th minute lead after Jordan Case’s first of two tries on the afternoon, although Rovers hit back to lead 10-6 at half time following efforts from George Lawler and Ryan Shaw.

Hull opened the gap after the break with tries from Shaun Lunt and Ben Kavanagh putting the hosts 22-6 up.

However Rob Massam then went over for the Hornets with 20 minutes to go, but Case’s second try came too late for the Hornets who suffered a seventh straight defeat in all competitions.

A frustrated Tim Sheens was happy with the win for Rovers, but not their performance. He said: “It was a win, that’s all.

“I’m not really happy with a number of things that we did. We spoke about our discipline before we went out but got dragged into the scrap and off-the-ball stuff.”

Toulouse Olympique remain four points behind Rovers after they cruised to a huge 60-4 win over Bradford Bulls in the south of France.

Kuni Minga scored a hat-trick for Toulouse, with Rhys Curran and Bastian Ader bagging two tries each.

Johnathan Ford, Gavin Maguerite, Paul Marcon, Stan Robin and Bastien Canet scored the other tries for the hosts, with James Davies scoring Bulls’ solitary effort.

Featherstone Rovers also remain within four points of Hull KR after they enjoyed a 25-14 win over Sheffield Eagles.

Matty Wilde, Keal Carlile, Scott Turner and Chris Ulugia all scored tries for Rovers, with Leeds Rhinos dual-registered Corey Aston kicking four goals and a drop goal, against the Eagles, coached by his father Mark. Garry Lo and Mark Mexico got tries for the visitors.

Halifax moved up to fourth on points difference after beating West Yorkshire rivals Batley Bulldogs at The Shay.

James Saltonstall and Will Sharp both scored twice, with Scott Murrell, Steve Tyrer, Brandon Moore and James Woodburn-Hall also getting tries for Richard Marshall’s side.

Batley’s try-scorers were Danny Cowling, Jy Hitchcox, Alex Rowe and Al Leak.

London Broncos drop to fifth, despite collecting a third consecutive league win after beating Ladbrokes Challenge Cup giant-killers Swinton Lions.

Jay Pitts, Matt Garside, James Cunningham, Apirana Pewhairangi (2), Ben Evans and Lewis Bienek were all on the scoresheet for the Broncos.

Mike Butt scored a hat-trick for Swinton, who last week won at Super League’s Huddersfield Giants. Andy Bracek and Connor Dwyer got the other tries for Scott Naylor’s men.

A fantastic second-half comeback from 6-24 down, saw Oldham deny Dewsbury Rams only their second win of the campaign, after Scott Naylor’s men collected a 28-24 win at the Tetley’s Stadium.

Adam Neal gave Oldham an early lead but it was all Dewsbury in the first half, with efforts from Andy Kain, Robbie Ward, Paul Sykes and James Glover, putting them firmly in control.

However Oldham completely dominated after the interval, and tries from Michael Ward, Kieran Gill, George Tyson and Joe Burke handed them an impressive comeback win.

All Kingstone Press Championship teams will be in action at this year’s Summer Bash at Bloomfield Road, Blackpool on Saturday, May 27 and Sunday, May 28. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Rugby League Ticket Office on 0844 856 1113 or by visiting www.rugby-league.com/tickets.
