By John Seager

There was some fantastic Wheelchair Rugby League played over the past weekend, as the WRL Challenge Cup got underway.

Eight teams took part in Round One of the competition with the action starting on Saturday as Dundee Dragons made a trip across the border to play Bradford Bulls.

Both sides started well, but it was the Bulls who took control of the game as they led 46-12 at half time.

The second half saw the Bulls pull further away and their star man was George Herd.

He scored some a two superb tries and picked up the Man of the Match award as the Bulls ran out comfortable 72-34 winners.

The action continued on Sunday in Scotland with two debutants to the competition as Glasgow Panthers hosted Keighley Cougars.

Glasgow started the game on the front foot and took an early 20-point lead.

The Cougars did get on the scoresheet through James Kaye, but the Panthers scored more tries through Dylan King and Adam Mould which helped see them lead 34-12 at the interval.

The Panthers continued their domination into the second half. King and Mould again were at the forefront for the panthers as they completed a brilliant attacking display, winning the game by 62-18.

Also on Sunday, Gravesend Dynamite welcomed Hereford Harriers, who were looking to make an upset in Kent.

Both sides exchanged tries early on in the game, but Dynamite player-coach Jason Owen, who scored three first half tries for his side, helped the home side take a 42-14 half-time lead.

Owen continued his dominance into the second half - this time, he scored a second half hat-trick, while creating tries for James Hazel and Jack Linden.

Michael Grant finished off the scoring with a superb catch on the wing, as the Dynamite won 102-32.

Finally on Sunday, Folkestone Spitfires continued their start to the season as they took on the Dartford Vipers.

They took control of the game from the start, with Tim Sharp scoring some fantastic tries for the Spitfires.

Both sides played the game with some great spirited between them, but it was the Spitfires who came out on top by a score of 142-4.

All four sides join the Leeds Rhinos, Medway Dragons, Hull FC and the defending cup holders Halifax in the quarter finals.

The draw will be held soon with the ties taking place on the weekend of the 4th and 5th June.

There were also two games played in the South Development League in Kent over the weekend.

Hereford played their opening games of the season and they started with a good 72-14 victor over the Dartford Vipers.

Both sides started well, but some good tries from Matt Woolloff and Gary Preece gave them lead, which the Vipers couldn't chase down.

In the second game though, they were up against a determined Gravesend Dynamite side and despite the best efforts of Woolloff and Preece, the Dynamite came out on top with an emphatic 66-18 victory.
