Mikey Wood extends stay with Newcastle

Mikey Wood has extended his stay at Kingston Park after signing a new contract ahead of the 2021 Betfred Championship season.

The 23-year-old made five appearances for Newcastle Thunder in 2020 prior to the curtailment of the season. Wood also spent time on loan with the club from Huddersfield Giants in 2016 and 2017.

On re-signing, Wood said: “I can’t wait to be back playing with the Thunder lads after the disappointment that we never got to finish the season this year.

“I loved every minute that I played. I’ve been training hard during lockdown – a lot of gym work and running but I’m looking forward to starting some field training with the boys.

“I think we’ve got the potential to do really well this season and it will be great to play alongside some of the new talent that has been signed.”

Thunder’s Director of Rugby, Denis Betts, added: “Mikey is a committed front-rower who works hard and has a lot of drive and ambition.

“He is good at the play-the-ball, has a good work ethic and is the sort of player that you want in your squad, so I am pleased he will be back with us for next season.”
