Former England and Great Britain international returns to coaching

Mirfield Stags have announced the appointment of former Great Britain and England Rugby League star Leon Pryce as the club’s new Head Coach.

Pryce lifted the Betfred Super League trophy on four occasions during his career with Bradford Bulls and St Helens as well as winning the Coral Challenge Cup, League Leaders’ Shield and World Club Challenge. The halfback also represented Catalans Dragons and Hull FC.

The 39-year-old returns to coaching after a two-year stint with Betfred League 1 side Workington Town came to an end midway through the 2019 season.

On the move, Pryce said: “I am looking forward to getting started and having some fun coaching again.

“From what I have seen, and what Richard has told me about the club, it seems well run and was obviously successful last year, so I hope to build on what is in place already.

Richard Silverwood said: “It was my intention to coach the team again but when I saw a guy with Leon’s pedigree out of the game, I saw it as a great opportunity for us to grow.

“Whilst demoting myself to assistant, I do enjoy coaching and I see it as a win-win for all concerned.

“The players learn, and I will learn from Leon, whilst also spending time growing the club off the field.

“Plans for a junior set-up are very much high on the agenda as well as plans for a clubhouse.”
