Official Report / Commentary

Wigan Warriors moved back to within four points of Betfred Super League leaders St Helens after staging a remarkable fightback to beat Catalans Dragons 32-23.

The Warriors were 21-0 down early in the second half but rallied superbly to stun their hosts in Perpignan.

Catalans were in control at half-time thanks to tries from Benjamin Jullien and David Mead plus seven points from the boot of Tony Gigot.

The Dragons appeared to move out of sight early in the second half when Benjamin Garcia crossed.

Gigot's fifth goal from a penalty just after Dan Sarginson's try made it 23-4 but Wigan scored 28 unanswered points through tries from Oliver Gildart, Joe Burgess, Liam Farrell, Sam Tomkins and Tony Clubb to record a stunning victory.

Wigan coach Shaun Wane said: "Very, very proud of that performance in the second half. We gave ourselves a lot to do but we turned up in the second half with some great performances.

"We found a way to win. I am the ultimate optimist, especially with this team, and I never doubted them.

"It was a shockingly bad half time but we spoke really honestly with each other and they took it to heart and went out there and performed the way they did.”

Catalans Dragons head coach Steve McNamara said: "I thought we were outstanding for 50 minutes, played exceptionally well against a very good team and then made some ridiculous decisions with the ball, and ultimately couldn’t get the momentum back. They’re pretty distraught down there (in the changing rooms).

“I thought we were incredible and we looked like a very good team. I feel like we’re starting to come together as a team. That start showed us how we can play both in attack and defence against a very good team.”
