Last Friday, former England and Great Britain Rugby League International and Wigan Warriors legend Sean O’Loughlin confirmed he will retire from the sport at the end of the 2020 Betfred Super League season.
Over the weekend teammates, opponents, clubs, journalists and all who have enjoyed Sean O’Loughlin’s career took to Twitter to share their thoughts on his retirement…
“I can’t think @SeanOL13 enough for all of the things he has taught me over the years. I feel privileged to have achieved what we have done together, with a fellow Wiganer, and best pal by my side.
“He is the ultimate professional and incredibly humble, but also a fierce competitor, making him an absolute pleasure to coach. He has achieved so much, not just at club level but also at an international level. I’m gutted we won’t get the chance to represent our country together.
“I am personally wounded that he doesn’t get the send-off he deserves, in front of a packed crowd, full of fans at Old Trafford. But he should be proud of what he has done over a long and successful career.”
“Congrats on a great career @SeanOL13. Best player I’ve played with literally can do it all.”
“Sad to see lockers retire been massive for me coming through as a kid someone I’ve looked up to massively and now get to call him a good mate hopefully the boys can send him off with what he deserves.”
“What a privilege it has been to have played alongside this legend. Not only playing but training day in day out with him. We’ll do everything we can to send him out with a GF WIN!! 2 games to go skip @SeanOL13.”
“One of the very best to play our great game. Congrats on an unbelievable career mate been a privilege to play with & against you and become a good friend.”
“Congratulations on a fantastic career. One of the best to play the game, a great bloke too. All the best Lockers. You deserve a rest. Maximum respect.
“One of the absolute greats, both on and off the pitch. It’s hard to think of many people who are so successful and so universally liked.”
“Absolute honour to say I’ve played with lockers absolute legend of our game. He is a true Warrior.”
“Some player, congratulations on a great career Lockers.”
“We’ve enjoyed the battles with you over the years and we may just have one final battle with you this season. Congratulations Sean O’Loughlin on a great career for club and country.”
“Congratulations to @SeanOL13 on an incredible career with his home town club and the national side, a modern Rugby League great.”
“What a servant to Rugby League.”
“After James Graham, another iconic forward of the last generation to hang up his boots. Almost always the first name mentioned by NRL players/internationals when asked which counterparts in Super League they most respected, and consistently lauded by team-mates.”
