England’s Canberra Raiders stars returned to winning ways this weekend with a 6-14 victory over Wests Tigers on Saturday, with Ryan Sutton making his first appearance of the 2020 campaign.
However, it was half-back George Williams who once again took the plaudits as he notched another try-assist with a fantastically weighted kick for Nick Cotric. Williams’ assist means he now tops the NRL’s try-assist rankings with 6 alongside Manly Sea Eagles’ Tom Trbojevic and Cronulla Sharks star Shaun Johnson.
Josh Hodgson and Elliott Whitehead were instrumental in keeping the Tigers down to just six points with Hodgson making 40 tackles, more than any other Raiders player. Whitehead notched 33 defensive efforts.
James Graham’s St George Illawarra Dragons side looked to have turned the corner earning their first victory over the 2020 NRL season knocking off Cronulla Sharks 30-16. Despite only featuring for 40 minutes, Graham ran for over 100 metres and made 22 tackles in an impressive team performance by the Dragons.
South Sydney Rabbitohs also got their season back on track thanks to a dominant 32-12 win over Justin Holbrook’s Gold Coast Titans on Saturday. Tom Burgess made more metres – with 213 – than any other Rabbitoh having spent just 48 minutes on the field.
Youngster Herbie Farnworth featured on the wing in Brisbane Broncos’ narrow 20-18 defeat against Manly Sea Eagles in the opening fixture of Round Five. Farnworth was Brisbane’s second-highest metre-maker as he continues to look to cement a permanent spot in Anthony Seibold’s team.
Farnworth will kick off Round Six as the Broncos travel to Newcastle Knights on Thursday. Burgess’ South Sydney host New Zealand Warriors, Graham’s Dragons will look for consecutive victories as they battle Gold Coast Titans while Canberra face a tough test against Manly.
