England Women’s international Rachel Thompson will captain Wigan Warriors throughout the 2020 Betfred Women’s Super League season.
The centre – who toured Papua New Guinea with England last Autumn – has previously won the Women’s Super League with Wigan in 2018 as vice-captain.
Thompson said: “I’ve enjoyed being vice-captain for the past two years and I’ve learned a lot about the game and myself as a player in that time.
“The step up to captain is a big one, but it’s a challenge that I’m really looking forward to. We’ve got a good set of girls to work with, and I hope that I can bring out the best in each of them, and that we can get back to enjoying our time in Cherry and White.
“I suppose it’s every little girls’ dream not only to play, but to Captain your hometown team, so it feels pretty special.”

Wigan are set to begin their 2020 Betfred Women’s Super League on the road to league newcomers Warrington Wolves, with a new revised structure being implemented for the 10-team competition.
Thompson said: “It’s been amazing to see how the Women’s game has grown over the past few years and hopefully this year will be bigger and better than ever.
“The Women’s Super League has become more competitive with each passing year, so I don’t see this year being any different, particularly with the Women’s World Cup on the horizon in 2021.
“Our aim for this year is to get back to being a more determined team. We know what it takes to get to a Grand Final and win it, and we know we have the players and coaching staff to make that happen again, so we won’t be settling for anything less this year.
“We did it tough in 2019, but we got through it and still made it to a Semi-Final, so we know we can do it.”
The Betfred Women’s Super League will kick-off on Sunday 29 March. All 2020 fixtures are available here.
