England's Williams lands in Canberra

England’s George Williams has arrived in Australia following his move to 2019 NRL Grand Finalists Canberra Raiders and is excited following his first training sessions.

Williams said: “I’ve always wanted to come and test myself, I said that from a pretty young age that if I had the chance I would.

“I think it’s the right time. I’m 25 now and the NRL is considered the best competition in the world, so I’m just looking to test myself.

“I’m under no illusions. They’re a great team and I’ve got to find my feet first and I can’t be presuming I’m getting picked Round One.

“I’ve got to work hard. I’ve got six to eight weeks now to prove I’m good enough to play Round One and that’s exactly what I’m doing.”

The Raiders already have a host of English talent in their ranks with John Bateman, Elliot Whitehead, Josh Hodgson and Ryan Sutton and Williams feels this will help him settle.

“I’m a long way from home but a bit of normality always helps,” Williams said.

“There’s probably going to be times throughout the year when I miss my family, but the boys will get around me and I’m sure I’ll be fine.

“The English boys told me they are a good bunch of lads here and they’ve all been great with me and the coaching staff have been the same.

“I’m really excited.”

Williams could feature for the Raiders on Friday 13 March as they welcome the visit of Kallum Watkins’ Gold Coast Titans.
