Kyle Amor stresses importance of Wembley

St Helens feature in the Coral Challenge Cup Final for the first time in 11 years

St Helens’ Kyle Amor has won the Super League Leaders’ Shield and Grand Final as well as featuring in the World Club Challenge however he feels that the club’s return to Wembley Stadium for the Coral Challenge Cup Final is key to helping restore their ‘identity’.

Amor said: “It’s been 11 long years and St Helens used to be renowned for winning that Challenge Cup trophy on numerous occasions, particularly in the early years of the summer era.

“It is important for our club and our identity getting back there and hopefully getting the job done and lifting that trophy.

“Apart from James Roby, it’s the only thing that this playing group hasn’t done and he said, when he came off the back of the 2006, 2007 and 2008 Challenge Cup triumphs, if someone had told him it would be 11 years before he’d got back there he’d have laughed in their face.

“We’ve spoken about how every time you get to a final you need to grab it with both hands because you never know when the next one is.

“The Challenge Cup is something that as a club we’ve been after for a while and we’ve made no secrets about it that we fell short last year, and it was a big thing for us to put that right by progressing from the semi-finals this season.

“The club and town, as a whole, deserves to be here and we’re really excited to walk out at Wembley.”

The prop-forward featured in St Helens’ 12-30 victory over Warrington a fortnight ago but knows – despite beating the Wolves on three occasions this year – they can’t read too much into that game.

“We’re under no false pretences that last time out neither side had their strongest teams on the field,” Amor said.

“Obviously we were happy to get the victory, but we know we’re going to face a tougher opposition this weekend and we really need to carry on our league form to Wembley.”
