England Community Lions Coaching Staff Appointed

Steve McCormack has been appointed as Head Coach of the England Community Lions Under-16s programme. McCormack has had extensive experience coaching within the Championship and Super League, before moving over to the Scotland National Team from 2004 to 2017.

Tom Wood (Leigh Miners) and Rob Nickolay (City of Hull), from within the Community Game, have been appointed assistant coaches to Steve ahead of the autumn programme.

“I am really grateful for the opportunity to be Head Coach of the Under 16s England Community Lions. I know how important the Community game is to our sport and to be part of an England representative pathway is a big honour for me. I am really looking forward to being involved in an International set up again and can’t wait to meet the coaching staff and players.” said McCormack

The Under-23s programme has appointed Lee Roberts (Skirlaugh) and Paul Crouch (Lock Lane) as joint coaches for the programme. They will be assisted throughout by Director of Rugby, Allan Coleman.

Speaking on the appointments, Allan Coleman, Director of Rugby for the England Community Lions Programme said: It’s very exciting times ahead for the England Community Lions programme. The programme is something we have been speaking about for a while, and it is designed to improve retention within the community game for players, hence the addition of representative opportunities at age groups where we may expect participation as a player to drop off.

"I am delighted to appoint Paul Couch, Head Coach of Lock Lane and Lee Roberts, Head Coach of Skirlaugh, to be joint head coaches with myself working alongside them, with the opportunity to create a great pathway right through for players. I am sure these two fantastic young coaches will be absolutely fantastic for the development of the programmes and players involved.

"The Under-16s programme will be a fantastic addition, giving that age group a great opportunity to represent your country, retain more players within the community game and provide once-in-a-lifetime touring opportunities. We are delighted to name our head coach as Steve McCormack, an outstanding coach with vast amounts of experience and knowledge to not only develop our players, but also the coaches around him.

"Steve will be assisted by Thomas Wood from Under-18s Head Coach at Leigh Miners, and Rob Nickolay, whom is heavily involved within the City of Hull set-up across the community game.

"I cannot wait to see the next 18 months for the England Community Lions Programme, I feel we have developed a strong and clear pathway for all community players to get involved and a great coaching team with the ability to deliver it.”
