London snatch late draw against Sheffield

London snatch late draw against Sheffield

Oldham also victorious versus Halifax

Sheffield Eagles and London Broncos played out a dramatic draw at the Keepmoat Stadium in Round Four of the Betfred Championship with Jarrod Sammut’s last-minute penalty goal ensuring the spoils were shared.

Mark Aston’s side looked to have the game won when Aaron Brown crossed in the 79th minute, however London would get a chance with a late penalty goal which Sammut duly converted.

Sheffield started the stronger with tries from James Glover and Izaac Farrell giving the Eagles the lead at the break. London also crossed twice in the first half via Tuoyo Egodo and Abbas Miski, but failed conversations meant the Broncos were stilling chasing the game.

Miski – who crossed for a double in his debut earlier in the season – would add a hat-trick to his name in the second half with two tries inside 11 minutes with the latter giving the visitors a 14-18 lead heading into the final seven minutes.

However, drama would unfold as Brown and Farrell’s conversion looked to have won the game before Sammut snatched the victory away from Sheffield.

There were similarly dramatic circumstances in Oldham’s 16-12 victory over Halifax Panthers at Bower Fold.

Jack Croft – who joined the Roughyeds on loan from Wakefield Trinity earlier in the week – scored in the 78th minute to seal Oldham’s second victory of the 2021 Betfred Championship season.

Halifax had a 4-12 lead at the break thanks to tries from Conor McGrath and James Woodburn-Hall however the Panthers failed to score in the second half. Tommy Brierley and Martin Reilly were Oldham’s other try-scorers.
