‘Best documentary’ award for prominent Rugby League partner Community Integrated Care

A BBC Panorama production featuring one of Rugby League’s major partners has been awarded the ‘Best Documentary’ in the Current Affairs category at this week’s Royal Television Society Journalism Awards.

The Forgotten Frontline, which followed the unfolding tragedy in care homes as they struggled to protect residents against Coronavirus, was made in association with Community Integrated Care – sponsor of the Learning Disability Super League and a prominent supporter of RLWC2021.

Over several months cameras were allowed into two very different care homes, revealing the dedication of care staff, the frustration of managers, and the heartache as more and more people succumbed to the killer virus.

RFL Chief Executive, Ralph Rimmer, says: “Community Integrated Care is Official Social Care Partner to the World Cup, and we are very proud of their dedication to working with a great many people with learning disabilities, with autism, with dementia and others in need of mental health support. This came through very clearly during one of the most moving television programmes of an extremely difficult and emotional year.”

Panorama spent four months with Community Integrated Care, charting a team’s journey through the peak of the pandemic and following the progress of senior leaders as they coordinated the organisation’s response. The programme captured the gut-wrenching tragedy of a Covid outbreak and the passing of much-loved residents, as well as the endless love, compassion and bravery of Community Integrated Care staff.

The Forgotten Frontline was broadcast in July 2020, achieving widespread critical acclaim and engagement across social media platforms. The programme can be seen again here: BBC One - Panorama, The Forgotten Frontline.

Community Integrated Care and Rugby League World Cup 2021 recently joined forces to develop a ground-breaking volunteer programme, supported by Sport England, through which the charity will create a range of accessible and aspirational volunteering opportunities for people who have care and support needs.
