Official Report / Commentary

Warrington Wolves held off a brave Hull KR fightback to win their Coral Challenge Cup quarter-final 28-22 at KCOM Craven Park.

Warrington outscored Rovers by five tries to four but played with just 11 men for part of the first half after Tom Lineham and Dec Patton were both shown yellow cards.

The home side failed to score while they held the numerical advantage and ultimately paid the price.

Warrington’s tries came from Jake Mamo, Blake Austin, Lineham, Ben Murdoch-Manila and Ben Currie, with Patton kicking four conversions.

Josh Drinkwater crossed twice with Rovers’ other tries coming from Ben Crooks and Craig Hall, while Ryan Shaw kicked three conversions,

Warrington coach Steve Price said: “The first half was outstanding. To play with 11 men, to absorb that amount of pressure inside our 30 was what our foundations have been built on over the last 18 months.

“I am super proud of our boys, especially in that first 40 minutes. They had 34 play-the-balls inside our 30 and we had four. Then we lost two of our left-side players and had to adapt.

“The 20 minutes after half-time we were in control. It was 22-0 and we were playing some reasonable footy.

“I was very disappointed with our attitude and our discipline, especially with the ball, that back end of the game. To give away a penalty, especially when you’ve got the ball, is unacceptable.

“(But) credit to the players, 80 minutes away from another Wembley (appearance) and that’s what we’ re striving really hard to do."

Frustrated Rovers coach Tim Sheens said: “We had a chance with them down to, at one stage, 11 men and couldn’t put a point on the board, that’s very disappointing.

“Brain explosions were the issue, we tried to score without actually planning it, we just rushed it.

“They didn’t win that game tonight, we lost it. We shot our ourselves in the foot. We didn’t play with our heads. There were so many fundamental errors and silly things.”
