The RFL contacted Jermaine Coleman, the coach of London Skolars, following his comments in a newspaper interview regarding social media posts.
The RFL’s Compliance Manager then investigated whether the posts breached the RFL Operational Rules including whether they brought the game into disrepute and whether they included any Unacceptable Language (including language based on an individual’s ethnic origin) or the RFL’s Social Media Policy. This included contacting the four individuals whose comments were highlighted to seek their explanations.
The RFL also obtained external advice which confirmed that the specific comments could not be determined as being discriminatory.
Based on all of the available evidence, the RFL Compliance Manager concluded that the individuals did not use Unacceptable Language (based on ethnic origin); however, did breach the Social Media Policy.
Therefore she determined that the individuals should each receive a warning as to future behaviour. In addition, the individuals have been instructed to undertake the RFL’s education on the use of social media.
