York and Leigh clinch Championship play-off places

Betfred Championship round-up

York City Knights continued their remarkable season by securing a Betfred Championship play-off place following a 22-18 triumph over Featherstone Rovers.

Rovers had beaten York heavily in both encounters this season, winning 42-12 and 42-10, and looked on course for victory number three when they raced into a 12-0 thanks to tries from Jack Render and Callum McLelland.

Will Oakes and Kris Brining cut the deficit to two points at the break, but Featherstone moved 14-10 ahead through Dane Chisholm's penalty.

However, Graeme Horne scored to put York ahead for the first time before Joe Porter improved their lead to 22-14 with eight minutes left.

Alex Sutcliffe set up a tense finale as he crossed in the final minute but the hosts, who were one of the favourites to go down this season, held on to clinch a top-five spot.

Leigh Centurions piled the pressure on second-placed Toulouse Olympique XIII with a hard-fought 34-22 triumph over Widnes Vikings.

Iain Thornley and Stefan Marsh scored braces of tries apiece, with Adam Higson and Liam Hood crossing as Leigh also secured a play-off place at the end of the season.

Widnes, who trailed 22-6 at the break, endured the scoreline was respectable thanks to tries from Jayden Hatton, Keanan Brand's double and Olly Ashall-Bott.

Sheffield Eagles remain in play-off contention following a 44-18 success over struggling Barrow Raiders.

The match was not as straightforward as it seemed for Sheffield, who only led 16-12 at the break following tries from Ryan Millar (two) and Aaron Brown's score, with Barrow hitting back through Tom Walker and Deon Cross.

However, the Eagles ran in five second-half tries, courtesy of Josh Gudzek and braces from Corey Makelim and Menzie Yere, while Jono Smith grabbed a consolation for the visitors.

Toronto Wolfpack ran out 46-0 winners at home to already-relegated Rochdale Hornets but not without late drama off the field.

Matty Russell scored a hat-trick as Toronto ran in nine tries in total but the match finished six minutes prematurely due to the threat of thunder and lightning in the area of the Lamport Stadium.

Toulouse defeated Batley Bulldogs by the same scoreline as Mark Kheirallah finished with a points tally of 18.

Bradford Bulls ran in six tries as they eased to a 34-10 win at Dewsbury Rams, who retained their Championship status despite defeat, while Swinton Lions were 32-12 victors against Halifax.
