Four periods of extra-time were needed to separate Hull Kingston Rovers and Castleford Tigers in an enthralling encounter at Craven Park, with a Gareth O’Brien drop-goal completing a Tigers comeback and booking their place in Round Four of the Betfred Challenge Cup.
Daryl Powell’s side managed to take the game into extra-time scoring a sensational try on the full-time hooter with a superb Paul McShane offload setting Jordan Turner free down the left-hand side to tie the game up at 32-32.
Hull KR had raced into a 22-6 lead before half-time with Ethan Ryan opening the scoring before Adam Quinlan, Albert Vete and Matt Parcell all crossed in quick succession. Jake Trueman notched Castleford’s only effort of the first half.
Castleford started the stronger of the sides after the break with Derrell Olpherts scoring on the right-hand side before current Steve Prescott Man of Steel McShane burrowed his way over.
However, the Robins hit back and once again found themselves with a ten-point lead as Shaun Kenny-Dowall powered his way over and Jordan Abdull also added his name to the scoresheet.
McShane was pivotal to the visitors mounting another fightback as he scored his second of the evening before throwing the crucial offload which allowed Turner to take the game to extra-time.
Both sides had a number of shots at goal with the likes of Trueman, Danny Richardson, Abdull and Mikey Lewis all missing the target before O’Brien slotted a one-pointer on the 99-minute mark.
Elsewhere, Wigan Warriors comfortably progressed in the Betfred Challenge Cup with a 0-26 victory against York City Knights, in front of The Sportsman cameras.
Zak Hardaker, Harry Smith and Sam Halsall gave the Warriors a 0-14 lead at the interval while Umyla Hanley and Tony Clubb added tries in the second half.
