England Community Lions’ fightback falls short against Australia

England Community Lions’ fightback falls short against Australia

England Community Lions fell to a 20-12 defeat against Australia in their opening Physical Disability Rugby League match at the Rugby League World Cup, despite a spirited second-half fightback.

Tries from Chris Young and Sam Zeller brought England back into contention, but Australia held on to secure the win.

Australia made the stronger start, building a 12-0 lead by half-time and leaving England with ground to make up after the break.

With Australia’s advantage extended to 16-0, Young crossed for England’s first try minutes into the second half. Zeller added the conversion to reduce the deficit to 16-6 and give the Community Lions a route back into the contest.

Australia responded shortly afterwards with another try to stretch their lead to 20-6 after a missed conversion, leaving England again needing a response as they looked to close the gap.

The Community Lions continued to press as Zeller crossed for their second try to keep their hopes alive. Steve Bates added the conversion to bring England within eight points at 20-12 and set up a late push.

But neither side could add to the score in the remaining minutes, leaving England’s comeback short of overturning Australia’s lead.

The 20-12 result was a disappointing start for the Community Lions, but their second-half response gives them something to build on ahead of their next fixture.

England now turn their attention to New Zealand on Monday (2 November, KO 5:30am GMT) with the Community Lions looking to bounce back from their opening defeat.
