England produced a valiant display against Tonga in Perth but were ultimately beaten 30-12 in their opening Rugby League World Cup fixture, with the Pacific nation claiming a historic first Test victory over England.
After trailing 10-0 at half-time, England came out with renewed purpose and got themselves back into the contest through AJ Brimson's first try in England colours.
Tonga responded with two quick-fire tries to seize control, but England refused to give in, with Dom Young crossing to give the side hope before Tonga sealed the result late on.
Tonga had made England work hard throughout a tightly contested first half, with Stefano Utoikamanu opening the scoring after 23 minutes. Isaiya Katoa added the extras before slotting two penalties to give Tonga a 10-point advantage at the break.
England needed a response after the interval and delivered one in the early stages of the second half.
A sharp break from Hugo Savala created the opportunity, with Brimson on hand to finish and get England on the scoreboard. The successful start to the second half reduced the deficit to four points and gave Brian McDermott’s side renewed belief.
However, Tonga quickly reasserted their authority. Haumole Olakau'atu powered over in the 52nd minute before Tolutau Koula crossed just three minutes later, with the two tries stretching Tonga's lead to 22-6.
Facing an uphill battle heading into the final quarter, England showed their fighting spirit once again.
Young found his way over the line to bring England back within striking distance, cutting the gap to 24-12 and setting up a tense closing period.
But Tonga had the final say. Olakau'atu grabbed his second try of the afternoon to halt England's momentum and put the result beyond doubt, securing a 30-12 victory and a landmark first Test win over England.
