As we head into the business end of the Betfred Super League and NRL seasons, England head coach Brian McDermott will be encouraged by another weekend of standout displays from players hoping to force their way into contention for the upcoming Rugby League World Cup.
Wigan prop Luke Thompson again led from the front for the Warriors, producing another tireless performance in a depleted pack. The experienced front-rower powered his way beyond the 100-metre mark with ball in hand and provided the platform through the middle with big minutes.
Hooker Brad O'Neill was at his competitive best in the same game, producing a typically industrious display. Strong in defence and relentless around the ruck, O'Neill once again showcased the work ethic that has become a hallmark of his game, while Young outside back Zach Eckersley continued his impressive try-scoring campaign by crossing again to take his Super League tally to 22 for the season, leaving him joint-third in the competition and strengthening his credentials for England selection.
Jez Litten was once again influential for Hull KR as the Robins eased past Bradford Bulls. The hooker scored a try, laid on another and finished with 117 running metres in another eye-catching all-round performance.
Leeds Rhinos duo Jake Connor and Mikolaj Oledzki both got themselves on the scoresheet in victory. Connor crossed twice and registered two try assists as he continues to stake his claim for a spot in McDermott’s World Cup squad.
Matty Ashton enhanced his World Cup chances with another prolific outing for Warrington Wolves. The winger scored twice, set up another try and amassed 206 running metres, while teammate Ben Currie also crossed the whitewash.
Currie could become one of four players in England's 2026 World Cup squad to have also represented the nation at the 2017 tournament in Australia, alongside Wolves teammate George Williams, Kallum Watkins and Mike McMeeken.
Despite St Helens suffering defeat away at York, Harry Robertson and Jack Welsby both produced standout individual performances. Welsby scored two tries and created another, while Robertson also crossed, registered a try assist and finished with more than 200 running metres in another impressive display from the exciting youngster.
Over in the NRL, Herbie Farnworth and Morgan Knowles helped the Dolphins secure a hard-fought victory against the Dragons to cement their place inside the top eight. Farnworth topped 200 running metres once again, while Knowles produced another defensive masterclass with 41 tackles during a 47-minute stint.
Elsewhere, Dom Young crossed for a try as Newcastle Knights claimed an impressive away victory over reigning premiers Brisbane Broncos, ensuring England's outside-back stocks continue to impress heading towards the World Cup.
