Lift off for Wheelchair Rugby League in the West Country

Lift off for Wheelchair Rugby League in the West Country

A Wheelchair Rugby League opening evening at the Swindon St George club has been hailed as ‘a huge success’ – with regular Thursday evening sessions set to begin from 23 November.

Last week’s event at the town’s New College Sports Hall – delivered by experienced coach Tony Ellis – attracted seasoned players and newcomers alike, including some who had never even heard of Wheelchair Rugby League.

After introducing the new recruits to the format and rules of the games, Ellis delivered a basic skills and drills session before the rookies enjoyed their first taste of Wheelchair Rugby League under actual playing conditions.

Tony Ellis said: “We are seeing a huge surge in popularity of our unique form of Rugby League – and that was reflected in the marvellous turn out.”

Two-hour sessions will be held at the New College Sports Hall every Thursday from 8pm. All ages and abilities are welcome, including non-disabled people as well as regular wheelchair users. For more information, email swindonstgeorgerl@outlook.com.
