LNER Community Stadium to host Betfred Women’s Super League Grand Final

LNER Community Stadium to host Betfred Women’s Super League Grand Final

The 2023 Betfred Women’s Super League Grand Final will be held at the LNER Community Stadium in York on Sunday 8 October – and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports at 3pm.

York Valkyrie will have home advantage against Leeds Rhinos, the regular season league leaders having defeated Wigan Warriors 22-6 in the first of this afternoon’s play-off semi-finals at the same venue.

Wigan had taken an early lead through a Grace Banks interception try, but England’s Tara-Jane Stanley scored one try and was involved in two others as the Valkyrie came from behind to reach a second successive Women's Super League Grand Final.

Reigning champions Leeds Rhinos earned their Grand Final place courtesy of an extraordinary win in golden point extra time at St Helens in today’s second semi-final.

It was the Rhinos second win at the Totally Wicked Stadium this month – and they had to come from 16-6 down to do it. Tries from Caitlin Beevers and Lucy Murray helped the Rhinos take the tie into extra time, then Sophie Robinson collected player-of-the-match Caitlin Casey’s cross-kick to touchdown and set up a repeat of last year’s final.

Leeds are aiming to lift the trophy for a third time, having defeated Castleford Tigers in 2019 and York Valkyrie in 2022 – the losing finalists on both occasions having been coached by the now-Valkyrie head coach Lindsay Anfield.

York are aiming to follow in the footsteps of Bradford (2017), Wigan Warriors (2018), Leeds Rhinos (2019, 2022) and St Helens (2021) to become the fifth name on the Women’s Super League trophy. The Valkyrie suffered heartbreak at the hands of Leeds Rhinos last year when two tries from Caitlin Beevers denied them the title and also lost the Challenge Cup semi-final against St Helens this year to a Faye Gaskin drop goal.

The Betfred Women’s Super League Grand Final will take place at the LNER Community Stadium on Sunday 8 October 8, with live and exclusive coverage on Sky Sports from 3pm.

Tickets – priced £10 Adults, £7.50 Concessions and £2.50 Under 16s – are on sale now at eticketing.co.uk/rugbyleague
