Hemel Stags will play host to a Rugby League bonanza this Saturday (September 16) with the Southern Conference League (SCL) Final, Harry Jepson Trophy and two London Origin fixtures all taking place at the iconic Southern venue.
The days blockbuster fixture will be contested between Wests Warriors and Hammersmith Hills Hoists in the SCL Grand Final (KO 3.30pm). The Warriors will be looking to clinch the title for a third successive year but will face tough opposition in a Hills Hoists side who have suffered just one defeat all season.
Last year, head coach Kim Parkinson led the Warriors to a 20-12 victory against London Chargers and he’ll be hoping his side can replicate this on Saturday.
Before that, Medway Dragons take on Telford Raiders at 1.30pm in the Harry Jepson Trophy with both teams earning their place in the final after success in their respective regional leagues this season. The tournament has returned to the fixture list after a five-year hiatus with over 40 teams from across the Midlands and South competing for the trophy this year.
The Harry Jepson Trophy was founded in 1997 in tribute to the legendary Rugby League enthusiast and administrator for community clubs who emerged nationwide following the introduction of the Super League played through the summer months.
Saturday will also see the London Rugby League Origin Series kick off which will showcase the best junior talent from across the London and South East region. The aim of the series is to provide challenging playing opportunities for players with a hope of securing a place with the London Broncos in their Academy programme and in recognition of impressive performances during the season.
The RFL’s Southern Regions Development Manager, Stephen Guan, explains:
“The London Rugby League Origin Series is a representative program that allows the best U14’s and U16’s from clubs north of the Thames to play against their southern counterparts and it’s seen as the first step on the talent pathway for future professional players. It also provides opportunities for development and progression for community coaches and volunteers.
“This is the first of two fixtures between North and South – the second will take place on Sunday October 1 at Imber Court Sports Club and my thanks go to the London Junior League and their clubs along with the London Broncos for all their continued efforts in supporting the series.”
