Coventry Bears and Hunslet RLFC earned their first Betfred League 1 victories of the season with wins over West Wales Raiders and North Wales Crusaders, respectively.
Prop-forward Peter Ryan got Coventry off to the perfect start against the Raiders with his double inside the opening 20 minutes opening up a 0-12 lead.
West Wales hit back thanks to Marcus Webb but tries from AJ Towse – who joined in midweek from York - on debut and Liam Welham before half-time meant the Bears went into the break with a 4-22 lead.
The hosts notched the first try of the second half through Daf Phillips but couldn’t mount a comeback. Coventry opened up the scoreline with late efforts from Nathan Hill and Kieran Sherratt.
North Wales Crusaders began life at Stadiwm ZipWorld with a back-and-forth encounter with Hunslet.
Hunslet took the lead through Tom Ashton, but Anthony Murray’s men came back with tries from Cameron Brown and George Roby.
However, it would be the Parksiders who went into half-time ahead thanks to quickfire efforts from Welsh international Sion Jones and Kiedan Hartley.
The Crusaders once again found themselves level on 47 minutes as Gav Rodden raced clear to score under the posts, but Hunslet nudged themselves two points in front thanks to Simon Brown’s boot 15 minutes from time.
Hartley would soon grab his second of the game to seal victory for Hunslet. Roby – of North Wales – was handed a red card in the closing stages for a high tackle.
