Matty Costello has reunited with Richard Marshall joining Salford Red Devils on a three-year deal ahead of the 2021 Betfred Super League season.
Costello debuted for St Helens and has been part of the squad which has won back-to-back Betfred Super League titles. The 22-year-old has spent time in the Betfred Championship with Sheffield Eagles in 2018 and Leigh Centurions in 2019, with his performances for the Eagles earning him the Championship Young Player of the Year Award.
On joining the Red Devils, Costello said: “I’m pleased to be joining up with Rich [Richard Marshall] again.
“He did a lot with me at St Helens and brought us on there. We had a meeting now we’ve both joined Salford and I’m sure he’ll be looking to do the same here.
“There’s a lot of players with international experience in the backs as well, so I’m sure I will learn from how they train and play too.
“I’ve always enjoyed playing against Salford. They’ve been tight games where the crowd has been really loud, so I can’t wait to experience more of that next season.”
Salford boss Richard Marshall added: “Having worked with Matty a lot of the last two years, I’m really pleased to be working with him again.
“His versatility makes him a valuable asset for the squad, and he showed what he is already capable of with some impressive performances this season.
“This is a new challenge for him, so he will have to knuckle down in pre-season and force his way into an established backline.”
Director of Rugby and Operations, Ian Blease, commented: “The addition of Matty strengthens our squad as a whole and provides options in a number of areas.
“He is a talented young player, who is still developing, but has already tasted success and is hungry for more.”
