University Rugby League Origin Squads Named

The fifth annual University Rugby League Origin takes place on Saturday 1st February, 3pm Kick Off at Loughborough University with the South hoping to upset the form book and take a first win against the North.

The teams have been selected from players who competed in the Inter-Regional Games in November and is the last phase in the selection process for the England Universities team, with Head Coach Richard Tate tasked with selecting 26 players for the national team.
The South squad has three familiar faces in Robert Branton and Caley Gray who both featured in his 2019 squad, alongside Will Budd who had to withdraw from the 2019 squad after selection, but having observed the team training, England's selectors can be confident that they will not be only players pushing for representative honours.Similarly in the North squad, only Dan Munt and Nathan Taylor have previous England honours to the their name but with plenty of experience from the professional game in the ranks, the North will be confident.

"The Origin Head Coaches Adam Houston (North) and Ben Whincup (South) and their staff have done a great job of preparing the squads ahead of the Origin game and I'd like to thank them all again for their commitment again this year" said Richard Tate, England Universities Head Coach.
"Myself and Kevin Deighton (Assistant Coach) are looking forward to the game and seeing what all the players have to offer and I'm sure we'll have some difficult choices to make next week."
A number of players who took part in the Inter-Regional Games have been granted exemptions from the game on Saturday owing to professional club commitments or injury and will also be considered for selection, although this is not guaranteed. As such, to ensure that players of the right calibre are seen and to balance the squads, Ben Foskett, Joshua Bull, Ben Tatton and Charlie Tod will pull on a maroon jersey for the North rather than the blue of the South.
