Castleford hand Catalans heavy defeat

Castleford Tigers 41-0 Catalans Dragons

Castleford Tigers eased past bottom-placed Catalans Dragons to record a 41-0 victory to move into Betfred Super League’s top four.

The Dragons avoided relegation by winning the Million Pound Game last year but are destined for another battle to avoid the drop after just two wins so far this season.

After letting a 21-0 lead slip against Wigan Warriors last week, Catalans appeared devoid of confidence as a Luke Gale-inspired Castleford hit top form on his return from injury.

The England scrum-half laid on all three first-half tries with smart kicks and finished the afternoon with 13 points.

Paul McShane and Oliver Holmes both crossed twice for the Tigers while Michael Shenton, James Clare and Joe Wardle each scored once in a record Super League win over the Dragons.

Dragons coach Steve McNamara said: “That performance was unacceptable. I thought we made big strides the last couple of weeks but we took a huge step backwards today.

“There’s plenty of games left. We’ve got to start winning some games but to start winning some games we’ve got to start playing better than we did. Today was deeply, deeply disappointing for everyone involved."

Castleford coach Daryl Powell said: “We’ve had to really work hard but we’re in a good position now.

“We’re starting to see light at the end of the tunnel of what this team can become. Every year a team is a little bit different, and the signs are really positive for us at the moment.”
