Betfred Challenge Cup Round Five Round-Up

Betfred Challenge Cup Round Five Round-Up

Two Cumbrian clubs will join the Super League heavyweights in Monday night’s draw for the Sixth Round of the Betfred Challenge Cup – and that means Barrow Raiders and Whitehaven have also qualified for the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup, and a second chance to play at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this May.

Barrow, who are currently riding high with a 100% record in the Betfred Championship following their promotion from League One last season, were given a tough battle by Workington Town, who earned an 18-6 lead late in the first half inspired by their experienced playmaker Jamie Doran.

But Paul Crarey’s team took control in the second half with the much-travelled Australian half-back Jarrod Sammut following a fine individual try with a spectacular celebration, and Tee Ritson then flying in at the right corner.

Whitehaven continued their impressive recent form with a convincing 38-12 victory over York City Knights, who reached the Final of last year’s 1895 Cup at Wembley. Second-row Connor Holliday scored two of ‘Haven’s seven tries.

Featherstone Rovers, who beat York in last year’s 1895 Final, made powerful progress with a 54-20 win against Batley Bulldogs. Craig Hall, who won the Ray French Award as Player of the Match at Wembley, continued his prolific form with 26 points from two tries and nine goals.

Sheffield Eagles had claimed the first spot in the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup for 2022 on Saturday with a 50-30 win at North Wales Crusaders, the last League One club in contention. Matty Chrimes, a former England Students international, scored four tries for the Eagles, who were the inaugural 1895 Cup winners at Wembley in 2019 – and will also have the chance to add to their Challenge Cup pedigree which includes their famous win against Wigan in 1998.

Championship heavyweights Bradford Bulls and Leigh Centurions will complete the Betfred Challenge Cup Fifth Round in a Monday Night tie being screened live by Premier Sports – which follows the Sixth Round draw on BBC Look North and BBC Sport Online.

The draw for the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup will be made following the Sixth Round ties later this month.
