Betfred Super League Round Five Round-Up

Betfred Super League Round Five Round-Up

Champions St Helens continued their perfect start to the Betfred Super League season with a 28-2 victory over derby rivals Warrington Wolves while Wigan Warriors were beaten 28-0 by Catalan Dragons in Perpignan.

Jack Welsby and Tommy Makinson scored first-half tries for St Helens on Friday, with the in-form England winger going over again after the break.

Another score from Mark Percival pushed home Saints' advantage with Jonny Lomax's late try wrapping up a comprehensive win over Warrington, whose points had come from an early penalty by Stefan Ratchford.

Saturday's late match saw the Dragons romp to an impressive victory to end Wigan's unbeaten start.

The Warriors had secured a narrow win in in Toulouse last week but were second best as Sam Tomkins returned to haunt his former club by kicking six goals.

Mitchell Pearce and Mickael Goudemand both went over in the first half, while Tomkins made four conversions as the French side lead 16-0 at the break.

Pearce and Samisoni Langi, following a video review, added further tries, each successfully improved by Tomkins.

Jordan Dezaria and Wigan’s Kaide Ellis were both shown red cards late on as the Dragons closed out a comprehensive win to sit third.

Huddersfield Giants held off Castleford Tigers' fightback to secure a 36-24 victory at the John Smith's Stadium, where Ricky Leutele scored a hat-trick and four players spent time in the sin bin.

The Giants looked in control with an 18-0 half-time lead following tries from Owen Trout, Luke Yates and Jermaine McGillvary.

The Tigers, though, rallied to go in front with four tries in 18 minutes through Mahe Fonua and Greg Eden and a double by Jake Trueman.

Huddersfield centre Leutele, however, settled matters with a stunning 15-minute treble to guide his side to a fourth win in five.

In Friday's other games, Wakefield Trinity picked up their first Super League victory after seeing off bottom club Toulouse Olympique XIII 18-6.

Trinity took a two-point lead into the break at the Be Well Support Stadium after Guy Armitage quickly responded to Liam Hood's opening try for the hosts before Brad Walker kicked a penalty.

Kelepi Tanginoa then crossed for an early second-half score before Corey Hall went over late on to seal a much-needed victory.

Hull KR fended off Salford Red Devils' second-half recovery to secure a 21-16 win as the visitors suffered a third straight Super League defeat.

Rovers had gone into half-time with an 18-0 advantage following tries from Elliot Minchella, Matty Storton and Mikey Lewis as well as three successful kicks from scrum-half Jordan Abdull.

Salford rallied after the restart as Ken Sio and Shane Wright crossed before Joe Burgess added a third try, only for Lewis to grab his second score of the match to help secure the points.
