Betfred Challenge Cup round-up | Round 4

Sheffield Eagles overcame a scare to reach the fifth round of the Betfred Challenge Cup with a 40-20 win over Hunslet Club Parkside.

The 1998 cup winners trailed 12-6 in the first half of the match against the National Conference League side and the game was still in the balance with Sheffield leading 22-20 with only a couple of minutes remaining.

But after Evan Hodgson touched down on 77 minutes, Hunslet's resistance collapsed and there were further late tries for Ben Jones-Bishop and Ryan Johnson.

York City Knights saved the best until last as they eased into the fifth round with a 42-13 win over Newcastle Thunder.

The Knights scored seven converted tries, the pick of them arriving in the 79th minute when Brad Ward applied an acrobatic finish to a sweeping move across the pitch.

Newcastle had started strongly and led 12-6 after Jake Shorrocks converted Craig Mullen's 14th-minute try, but Ronan Dixon crossed to allow Jamie Ellis to level the scores 11 minutes late and from then on, York dominated this clash, which was shown live on The Sportsman.

Matty Marsh crossed twice to add to tries from Liam Harris and Marcus Stock, with Ellis perfect on all his conversion attempts.

The Royal Navy were making their first-ever appearance in the fourth round, but their trip to face Batley Bulldogs was a one-sided affair and not in their favour as they went down 66-6.

Winger Jonny Campbell scored his 100th Bulldogs try as he got two of their seven on the afternoon, while Tom Gilmore piled up 26 points, scoring two tries and kicking nine goals.

James Teixiera got the consolation score for the visitors which will live long in the memory despite the result.

Kieran Gill's hat-trick powered five-time winners Bradford Bulls to a 34-8 win away to London Broncos, while Featherstone Rovers, flying high in the Championship, beat Halifax Panthers 29-16 at The Shay.

Shane Toal also recorded a hat-trick, highlighted by an 80-metre interception, as Barrow Raiders beat Rochdale Hornets 38-12 on the road, while Workington Town shrugged off their recent poor league form to beat Dewsbury Rams 26-12 on home turf.

Whitehaven scored 11 tries to thrash Doncaster 60-0, while - on Saturday - Jordan Gibson scored a hat-trick of tries as North Wales Crusaders eased into the fifth round with a 30-8 victory at home to Hunslet. Crusaders are now the only League One team left in the competition, making them the lowest-ranked side in the draw for Round 5.
