The renowned Castleford community club Lock Lane produced the result of the Second Round of the Betfred Challenge Cup by shocking the professionals of Oldham in a stormy Sunday night tie which was interrupted twice because of floodlight failure.
Lock Lane, whose only previous victory over professional opposition had come against the short-lived Oxford club in 2016, earned a 10-0 half-time lead, before the floodlight issues at Oldham’s Vestacare Stadium caused disruption for both teams.
The game was in the balance at 16-12 before the player of the match Nathan Fozzard converted a late try to secure a 22-12 victory which takes Lock Lane into Tuesday’s Third Round draw.
Sunday’s other four ties had seen four Betfred League One clubs progress – Doncaster, Hunslet, Rochdale Hornets and Swinton Lions.
Doncaster withstood a determined challenge from the National Conference League club Thornhill Trojans at the Eco-Power Stadium to secure a 24-6 win.
Hunslet won a bruising all-West Yorkshire battle against Keighley Cougars 22-6, joining their community neighbours Hunslet Club Parkside in the Third Round draw after Parkside’s win against Stanningley on Saturday.
Rochdale will also have double representation in the Third Round draw, which will be held in the town as part of the commemoration of the centenary of Rochdale Hornets lifting the Challenge Cup for the only time in their history in 1922.
Hornets beat the newly-renamed Midlands Hurricanes 36-16 in an entertaining lunchtime tie which was streamed live by BBC Sport, joining Rochdale Mayfield in the draw after their impressive win at West Hull on Saturday.
Swinton Lions produced the most emphatic performance of the season so far with a 96-0 rout of West Wales Raiders at Stebonheath Park, with their new signing from Oldham Dan Abram equalling the club record of 14 goals in a match.
Sunday’s results mean there will be six Betfred League One teams in the Third Round draw, after victories for London Skolars and North Wales Crusaders on Saturday.
Lock Lane will be one of six community teams in the draw, joining Hunslet Club Parkside, Rochdale Mayfield, Siddal, York Acorn and the Royal Navy.
The draw for the Fourth Round will also be held in Rochdale on Tuesday evening – when the six Third Round winners will be joined by the 14 Betfred Championship Clubs.
