York sign Masi Matongo

York City Knights have confirmed the signing of Masi Matongo from Hull FC on a one-year deal for 2022.

Matongo, 25, has made over 50 Betfred Super League appearances for the Airlie Birds since making his debut for the club in 2015 against Wigan Warriors.

Three years later, in 2018, the Zimbabwean-born prop was named in the England Knights performance squad as well as in the following year.

The powerful prop forward now links up with York City Knights and joins a pack that, earlier this week, saw fellow Super League player Jordan Thompson sign up for 2022 and Matongo will be keen to fulfil the potential which saw him close to earning international recognition in recent years.

Knights Head Coach James Ford, speaking of the signing of the former Hull FC man, said: "Masi has shown in his early career he has outstanding potential.

"He's a big, strong player who will help us win control defensively and I'm very confident I can help his attacking game and get him playing above his previous levels."

On joining the Knights, Matongo said: "I'm really happy to have joined the club. A lot of great players have played for York and I've heard great things about Fordy as a coach.

"There's a lot of ambition here with what we're striving to achieve and I'm happy to be part of those plans.

"It'll be a good challenge for me with a new coach again and a new club."

Discussing the facilities, after paying a visit to look at them, Matongo was suitably impressed.

He added: "They're great facilities and definitely of Super League standard - the pitch, training facilities, dressing rooms, it's definitely as good as some top-flight clubs if not better so they're definitely giving us a great base to build from in 2022."

Matongo will be joining one of his good friends in the Knights squad for 2022, saying: "Liam Harris is one of my good mates and he messaged me straight away after I signed.

"It'll be great to play with him again, I’m buzzing about that."

On what Knights fans can expect from our latest recruit, Matongo explained: "I'll carry the ball and work hard for the team in defence.

"I'll be making sure I’m working hard, trying to win as many tackles as I can and offer myself with the ball when needed.

"I will be doing my best with whatever is asked of me to help the team."
