Wests Warriors and Medway Dragons in Southern title success

Wests Warriors and Medway Dragons in Southern title success

Wests Warriors were crowned this year's Southern Conference League champions as they overcame London Chargers 20-10 at Rosslyn Park on Saturday night.

In a double-header dubbed 'Southern Rugby League Finals Day', there was also a title for Medway Dragons who beat Brixton Bulls 38-18 to secure the London Premier League title for 2021.

Wests and the Chargers served up a stunning advert for Southern Rugby League as a raucous crowd cheered every pass, tackle and try in an enthralling 80 minutes.

Jarred Bassett proved to be the star of the show, going over for arguably the pick of the game's tries in the first half.

And with scores stuck on 16-10 to the Warriors entering a tense closing ten minutes, he would step up to provide the tension-relieving try to take the title back to Chiswick.

And earlier in the evening, Gillingham's Medway Dragons tasted success.

In a match packed with full-blooded tackles and a sprinkle of Rugby League magic throughout, the eventual winners held a slender half-time lead before their fitness shone through in the closing stages to pull clear.

Brixton hooker Conor Willetts enjoyed a superb first-half try, sprinting 60 metres to go in, but it was the day of his opposite number, the rangy Pete Cole whose interception try late on - the best of a host of classy scores in the game - rounded off the scoring in style.
