Club of the Week | Halifax WRL

They came out on top in what has been described as 'one of the best games Wheelchair Rugby League has ever seen'

Halifax WRL, Halifax RLFC's Wheelchair Rugby League team, are this week's Club of the Week after they completed a stunning league and cup 'double' on Saturday.

One of the founding members of the sport, the team won the 2016 Wheelchair RL Challenge Cup back in August, winning 92-48 against Leeds Rhinos in Huddersfield, before overcoming the Rhinos once again in the Grand Final on Saturday.

The showpiece event, held in Medway, Gillingham, saw a match described as 'one of the best games Wheelchair Rugby League has ever seen' unfold.

Fax came out on top 68-54, with six-try hero and player-coach Jack Brown proving crucial as they replicated their achievements from 2015 – securing a 'double-double'.

Fax enjoyed a hugely successful 2016 and finished the regular season unbeaten, winning all of their Premier Division fixtures, while they provided the opposition in Rochdale Hornets WRL’s first-ever match earlier this month.

They ended the year six points clear of Leeds, their nearest rivals, and scored more points than any other team, as well as boasting the league’s best defensive record.

They haven’t tasted defeat since June 2015 and, after the game, Halifax WRL captain Wayne Boardman said: "We had a lot of unforced errors, but we pulled through in the end.

"Next year, we're aiming to carry on being undefeated, but there’s nothing more we could have wanted from the last two years. It’s been a brilliant experience for all the guys and we can’t wait for the Four Nations now."

Wheelchair Rugby League is a mixed-gender sport and is open to anyone, including able-bodied athletes.
