Dannielle Anderson announces Retirement from Rugby League

Leeds Rhinos Women star and England international, Dannielle Anderson has retired from rugby after suffering a second ACL injury.

Anderson appeared in seven finals Leeds, winning two Grand Finals and two Challenge Cups.  She made 55 appearances over six seasons, putting her joint seventh in the club’s history, and scored twelve tries.  Her last appearance came in the 2023 Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup Final at Wembley when she suffered her ACL injury.

She made her international debut against France in 2018 and she went on to represent her country a further four times.

Speaking to Leeds Rhinos about her decision to retire Anderson said: “It was a hard decision to step away from Rugby League as it has been a big part of my life for many years, but ultimately health comes first.  After both ACL injuries in the past two years, I need to concentrate on the long-term future.

“I would like to thank Leeds for letting me be a big part of the club and helping me achieve many things in my career. I have had many happy years there. I am also grateful for my community club Oulton Raiders for getting me started and then also progressing to play for England. I would like to thank every coach and player who has been alongside me on my journey. I appreciate you all.”

Leeds Rhinos head coach, who played alongside and coached Anderson paid tribute: “Danni has been a massive influence on the club and has played a key role in our success.  She was one of our first-ever signings and a popular member of the squad, who always gave her all for the team.

“Unfortunately, she has had two big ACL injuries, which has ultimately led to her retirement.  It’s sad to see her career end in these circumstances, but she has achieved a lot in that time and she will be missed by us all.

“Her name is written in the history books of our club and she should be proud of her journey from starting her career with Oulton Raidettes to going on to represent Leeds and England.  We wish her all the luck for the future.”
