Immediate Medical Management on the Field of Play

What is the course?

The RFL Immediate Medical Management On the Field of Play Course (IMMOFP) is a high level medical qualification which is designed specifically for the pre-hospital management of players.

The course is accredited with the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh).

How does the course work?

Candidates are assessed on five elements according to an objective marking criteria, with an overall pass mark of 75% needed to pass the course. The assessment will compromise the following:

  • Pre-course MCQ - 5% - 40 question MCQ paper
  • On-course workstation - 10% - On-going, on-course assessment. Candidates will be assessed by instructors delivering the workstations with respect to their practical engagement in the learning tasks undertaken
  • Practical Scenario Exam - 25% - Objective marking criteria for professional performance within the practical scenario
  • CPR Exam - 25% - Objective marking criteria for professional performance within the practical scenario
  • Theory Paper - 35% - 50 question MCQ paper

The qualification must be reaccredited with recertification as set out in the four-year cycle below:

  • YEAR 1 Two-day IMMOFP course
  • YEAR 2 One-day refresher course
  • YEAR 3 One-day refresher course
  • YEAR 4 Two-day IMMOFP course

Medical staff have two months from the date of expiry to reaccredit their qualification (or until the first available course if there are no courses available within this time frame) or they will be prohibited from entering the field of play. It is the individual’s responsibility to check the expiry of their qualification. 

If a IMMOFP-R course is missed either in years 2 or 3 you must reaccredit your qualification the following year regardless of your certificate expiry date, and you will be prohibited from entering the field of play until successfully certified.  Please note, where a candidate holds PHICIS Level 3, they must attend IMMOFP refreshers in line with the annual cycles set out above.

Who can attend?

The RFL IMMOFP course is designed for all medical staff working (or volunteering) at clubs who are, or may be, involved in giving treatment or advice to players within a professional club environment (training and/or match days).

To attend the you must be one of the following:

  • Doctor, Paramedic, Physiotherapist.
  • Sports Therapist/Rehabilitator - applying for IMMOFP for the first time must hold an ITMMiF L4 or PHICIS L2 qualification.

NB:  L4 or L2 alternative qualifications does not permit a Physiotherapist, Sports Therapist or Sports Rehabilitator to provide on field medical game cover where IMMOFP is expressed as the required minimum level of qualification.

New Doctors and Physiotherapists have three months to successfully complete an IMMOFP course, or until the first available course if there are no courses available within this time frame. Please be aware that Paramedics, Sports Therapists/Rehabilitators must all successfully complete an IMMOFP course before entering the field of play

Accreditation (Two-Day)

  • Thursday 8th January and Friday 9th January
  • Thursday 28th and Friday 29th May
  • Dates in September TBC

Re-Accreditation (One-Day)

  • Wednesday 14th January
  • Wednesday 25th February
  • Wednesday 22nd April
  • Wednesday 24th June
  • Dates in September TBC

Venue: Carnegie School of Sport, Leeds Beckett University, Headingley Campus, Leeds LS6 3QQ.

We reserve the right to cancel a course if we have insufficient delegates registered.  In the event of cancellation, we will give at least 5 weeks prior notice, calculated from the date that the cancelled course was due to start. In the event of such cancellation, delegates will be transferred onto an alternative course where available or in the event that no alternative course is available, will be offered a full refund.

 

  • Any new members of club medical staff should complete an IMMOFP ROI form for us to update our internal records whether they need to book on to a course or not.
  • Club staff must gain permission to attend a course before enrolling and permit for funds to be taken from central distributions.  Club representative details must be completed on the application form in case of contact.
  • The cancellation period is set out as 5 weeks prior to the course start date.  Transfer requests will be considered on an individual basis if availability permits.  A medical note must be provided for cancellation due to illness for a refund or course transfer.
  • Places are booked on a first come, first served basis therefore we encourage you to book early to avoid disappointment or being prohibited from accessing the field of play.
  • Applications will only be considered that have been submitted with the relevant supporting documents, as outlined on the application form, unless currently held on file.
  • The September courses will be running; however specific dates are still to be confirmed. We hope to have these confirmed as soon as possible. We are still welcoming bookings at this stage, and please note that our cancellation terms are relaxed until the dates are finalised for these two courses. 

What does the course cost?

Two Day Course

For staff currently employed by an RL club payment (£675+VAT) will be made via a deduction from the clubs Central Distributions. Candidates must get permission from their club before applying. Independent candidates must pay for the course in full (£765+VAT) via BACS within 7 days of date of invoice which will be generated once a place has been confirmed by the RFL. We reserve the right to offer your place to another candidate if payment is not received within this time frame.

One Day Course

For staff currently employed by an RL club payment (£375+VAT) will be made via a deduction from the clubs Central Distributions. Candidates must get permission from their club before applying. Independent candidates must pay for the course in full (£405 +VAT) via BACS within 7 days of date of invoice which will be generated once a place has been confirmed by the RFL. We reserve the right to offer your place to another candidate if payment is not received within this time frame.

How to book your place

To book your place on a course please complete all applicable fields on the relevant Application Form (attached) and email with all supporting documents to IMMOFP@rfl.co.uk  Your place will not be confirmed until all the necessary paperwork has been received and verified at that time you will receive confirmation of your enrolment. 

 

The ROI form is to be completed in full for consideration of a place on a future IMMOFP course.    


The learner must meet all the required pre-requisites listed on this form (below) to be eligible for consideration.  Any learner who does not meet these requirements, fails to complete the form in full, provides any incorrect, absent or wrong professional registration details will be automatically rejected.
