How Try Tag Rugby Is Getting More People Involved in Rugby League Across the UK

In cities with little or no Rugby League presence, a social version of the game is introducing thousands to the sport for the first time.

Across the UK, thousands of adults are discovering Rugby League for the first time through Try Tag Rugby, a fast-growing, inclusive and minimal-contact format of the game.

Partnered with the Rugby Football League, Try Tag Rugby has become one of the country’s most successful participation programmes. In its peak season this summer, more than 11,000 weekly players and 900 teams took part across 33 towns, cities and boroughs.

Did you know?

  • Over 50% of Try Tag Rugby players have never played rugby before

  • Try Tag Rugby brings thousands of adults into rugby league activity every year

  • Many players go on to watch, support and get involved in other forms of Rugby League

A Welcoming First Step Into Rugby League

Tag Rugby’s appeal is simple, it’s fun, social and accessible. With no tackling, scrums or previous experience required, it offers a friendly entry point into Rugby League for adults of all fitness levels.

More than half of all players are completely new to rugby, while others are former Rugby League or Rugby Union players looking for a flexible, enjoyable way to stay connected to the sport.

“Try Tag Rugby is a fantastic stepping stone into the sport and helps show people what makes Rugby League so special,” says Alistair Davis, co-founder and Managing Director of Try Tag Rugby.

Growing Communities Through Franchising

A major driver of this growth is Try Tag Rugby’s franchise model, which empowers passionate local people to build Rugby League-linked communities in their own areas.

Franchisees now run thriving programmes in cities such as Brighton, Bristol, Edinburgh, Coventry, Newcastle, Oxford, Reading, Salford, Sheffield, Warwickshire and York. This is in addition to Try Tag Rugby’s company owned regions in London, Manchester, West Yorkshire and Wigan.

The most recent success story is Salford, where new franchisees Cameron and Suzie grew their community from zero players to nearly 200 within five months.  In Edinburgh, franchisee Clodagh Nic Lochlainn has built one of Scotland’s most vibrant sports communities with more than 800 weekly players during the peak season in just three years.

A Flexible Way to Support Rugby League Growth

Most franchisees run their Regional Communities part-time alongside full-time jobs, family and other personal commitments, starting with one or two league evenings per week and growing at a pace that suits them.

This makes the opportunity ideal for Rugby League fans, community-minded organisers and working professionals who want to help grow the game locally while running their own business.
