Sunday saw Hull and York Lokos Masters sides gather at East Hull ARLFC, for a special memorial fixture commemorating former Hull Masters player John “Tuppence” Penney.
It was an afternoon to remember as both sides played their part in an entertaining game of Masters RL – a fantastic effort by all, with several great tries contributing to a true Masters draw.
Chris Laidlaw of Hull Masters was crowned Master of the Game, as his ever-present Masters spirit saw him jump in and help out York Lokos.
John Penney’s son, Karl, who played for both teams on the day, was filled with pride and managed to give his thoughts on the day despite being exhausted from his efforts: “Thanks so much to all who played today in my Dad’s memorial game – we have raised £210 for Yorkshire Cancer Research, and I know we have all done my Dad proud!”
There’s more Masters action to come before the end of the season, starting this weekend with plenty of games across the country – Queensbury host Boothtown in what will be the first ever meeting between the two sides, whilst fixtures are in place at Thornhill, Guiseley, Hull, Bury, Springview Arelecdon, Chester and Leeds.
The latter stages of the domestic Masters calendar also paves the way for exciting international Masters news, as we edge closer to the International Masters Festival on Sunday 13 November at York St John’s University Sports Fields.
With the festival fast-approaching, confirmation of some teams’ plans has also arrived: the Australian and Canadian teams both arrive in England on Friday 4 November to enable them to acclimatise and squeeze in some game time.
The Canadians also have a scheduled Saturday morning run around at Wigan St Judes, before heading to the DW Stadium for the Women’s RLWC games.
Sunday 6 November will see both nations play a club fixture to prepare for the following week – the Australians, on their seventh trip to England, will travel to Leyland Warriors Masters who celebrate their 10-year anniversary of playing Masters Rugby League, whilst the Canadians make the journey over to Rochdale Masters for their game.
In true Masters style, both host clubs are planning a great welcome for the travelling players, with some international standard socialising after the games… Congratulations to both Leyland and Rochdale!
There will also be a first meeting between the nations, as Australia play Canada in a full Masters international game on Thursday 10 November with a 12pm kick-off at York St John’s University Sports Fields, in what is certain to be a memorable afternoon of Masters Rugby League.
