This all-Wigan derby proved to be a typically hard-fought contest.

There was little to choose between the sides in a tough first half thanks to some outstanding defensive work from both teams.

St Peter's, who were beaten 12-6 at Wembley last year, started the game well, forcing a brilliant try-saving tackle from St John Fisher's Kyle Atherton.

St Peter's then dropped the ball over the line but their pressure finally told as prop Tom Campbell broke from a scrum near the line and forced his way over for a try.

Loose forward Tom Lee was a constant threat for St Peter's but when they conceded successive penalties, St John Fisher took full advantage - James Moran crashed over and the conversion by Tom Ratchford put them 6-4 ahead.

However, just before half time, St Peter's regained the lead. A long pass out wide by Lee was knocked on by a defender and from the ensuing scrum Campbell marched over in a repeat of his first touchdown.

They went further ahead early in the second half after forcing a goal line drop out.

Joe Smith scored and Lee's conversion put them 14-6 in front.

St John Fisher were struggling to get out of their own half and their opponents turned pressure into points when Alex McCarthy crossed after another rampaging run from Campbell to put them 12 points ahead.

When St John Fisher finally managed to move into their opponents' half, they reduced the arrears with a try from Jamie Wildie.

Sensing that it might turn into a close contest, Lee eased St Peter's further ahead with a penalty to make it 20-10.

But their opponents hit back again, Toby Lee Dunne crossing and Callum Martin converting to bring his team to within four points.

However, St Peter's made sure of victory when Ryan Wood caught a goal line drop out on the full and forced his way over.
