Raiders looking to 'revolutionise' Rugby League in North Devon

Raiders looking to 'revolutionise' Rugby League in North Devon

"The game is thriving in the north of the country, in the midlands and in London, but Devon isn't quite there yet - I want us to be there."

North Devon Raiders' new Head Coach Stuart Nodwell is aiming to 'revolutionise Rugby League' in the area, and is keen to see pride restored amongst the Raiders' ranks after a tough 2015.

Raiders finished bottom of the South West Premier League table last year, ending the season without a point after struggling to attract playing numbers.

But Nodwell is feeling positive going into 2016: "I'm always keen to learn new things and I got through my coaching qualifications fairly quickly.

"I saw the Raiders' coach had stepped down and thought there was a lot of potential to build the club.

"They took me on earlier this year and now I not only want to revolutionise North Devon Raiders, but Rugby League in North Devon as a whole."

The Barnstable-based side, who were founded in 2009, reached the South West Cup Final in 2012, but Nodwell is looking to reach new heights with the club, starting from the bottom upwards.

"The first thing would be to get ourselves a solid grounding to build from," he said.

"Last year was tough for the club - they struggled with numbers for training and playing, but I'm hoping to change that. It would be good to really set this club up for some success.

"We want to make North Devon proud and results will help towards that aim.

"There's a big drive to promote Rugby League in the area," he added.

"The game is thriving in the north of the country, in the midlands and in London, but Devon isn't quite there yet - I want us to be there.

"I'm looking to help introduce Rugby League to primary schools in the area too, to build for the future.

"There's a big waiting list to join rugby union clubs in Devon - it would be great if people could realise the opportunity we have on offer to play rugby in the summer.

"There are so many benefits for rugby union players such as keeping fit during time off and developing skills in a different game. I just want people to know it's here.

"I'm hoping we'll be a lot better in 2016 but success isn't all about results for me.

"I'd just like to get the foundations in place for a bright future for Rugby League in the area.

"We are North Devon's only Rugby League club and we should be proud of that fact. I'd encourage anyone interested in being involved with the club, as a player or a volunteer, to get in touch."

North Devon's 2016 season is set to restart in May.
