Primary Rugby League is changing

New format for the Under-7s game is launched for 2015 season.
Primary Rugby League is changing

During 2013 the RFL and Leeds Beckett University piloted a range of changes to the current game format for under 7s, 8s and 9s. The aim of the pilot programme was to:

  • Increase FUN and ENJOYMENT
  • To ensure every child plays, all of the time
  • Increase involvement during games
  • Maximise participation
  • Maximise skill development

Throughout 2014 playing leagues played the new version of Primary Rugby League to test and evaluate the rule changes.

Following the 2014 season, consultation was carried out with the coaches who delivered the format and wider stakeholders to gain feedback on their experiences of delivering and playing the pilot game. The consultation process resulted in some further amendments being made to the playing formats.

The new formats will be introduced into the community game over the next three years as follows:

  • Under 7s - 2015
  • Under 8s - 2016
  • Under 9s – 2017
