Two New Rugby League Formats join the School Games Line-Up

The RFL is proud to announce two refreshed sports formats for its Primary and Secondary School Games offers, aligning with the vision of the Youth Sport Trust and the national School Games programme.

The School Games programme, funded by Sport England and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust, brings together a network of Active Partnerships, National Governing Bodies and School Games Organisers (SGOs). Together, they provide meaningful opportunities for young people to achieve 60 active minutes a day through high-quality school sport, competition and physical activity.

As part of the Youth Sport Trust’s overhaul of competition offers across all sports, Rugby League resources for Primary schools have been fully refreshed.

The refresh offers festivals at the heart of the experience, shifting the focus toward inclusive, fun-based participation. The updated TryLeague format prioritises the development of core thinking skills and fundamental movement skills, ensuring that every child can build confidence, competence and enjoyment through physical activity.

This approach encourages teamwork, creativity and problem-solving, while maintaining the excitement and values that Rugby League brings to young participants.

For Secondary schools, the offer has been broadened to create even more ways for young people to get involved. Alongside the well-established traditional formats, schools can now access structured Touch and Tag Rugby League competitions.

These formats provide inclusive and accessible playing opportunities that cater to varying ability levels and experiences. By diversifying the offer, the RFL aims to engage more students in meaningful competition, whether they are new to the sport or looking to further develop their skills.

The refreshed formats are designed to support teachers and SGOs with clear, flexible resources that align with the wider School Games vision, creating positive experiences that inspire lifelong participation in sport and physical activity.

Andrea Murray, RFL National Development Manager, commented:

“We’re delighted to launch our new Primary and Secondary School Games formats in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust. These refreshed offers place enjoyment, inclusion and skill development at the centre of the experience. By introducing festival-style activity in Primary schools and expanding competitive formats in Secondary schools, we’re creating more opportunities than ever for young people to engage with Rugby League in a way that suits them.”

With these new formats now live, schools across the country can look forward to an exciting new chapter for Rugby League within the School Games programme.
