Connor set to make Hull return

England utility back Jake Connor is set to make a shock comeback for Hull FC at St Helens on Friday.

Connor, who made an impressive international debut in England’s win over New Zealand in Denver in June, was ruled out for the rest of the season after tearing a hamstring against Saints in July.

However, Hull say he has recovered earlier than expected and has been included in coach Lee Radford’s 19-man squad for the Betfred Super League Super 8s clash as the Black and Whites seek to end an eight-match losing run.

It means Connor will have a month to prove his fitness ahead of England’s three-match Test series against the Kiwis, which starts in Hull on October 27.

It will be a boost for England coach Wayne Bennett after St George Illawarra stand-off Gareth Widdop was ruled out for the rest of the season with a dislocated shoulder.

Radford will still be without nine first-team players for Friday’s game but half-back Jordan Abdull, who recently submitted a transfer request, has been recalled after recovering from injury.

St Helens are expected to give a Super League debut to former Bradford Bulls second rower James Bentley in place of the injured Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook while hooker Aaron Smith is set to make his home debut in the continuing absence of James Roby.

Saints need only to avoid defeat to secure the League Leaders’ Shield.
