Performances across Super League and Challenge Cup

Prospective England Rugby League Ashes candidates were spread across two competitions this weekend with three Betfred Super League fixtures taking place alongside Round Five of the Coral Challenge Cup.

Salford Red Devils full-back Niall Evalds – who has been a part of the England Knights squad for the past two seasons – was instrumental in his side’s comeback victory over Wigan Warriors.

Evalds sliced through a gap in the Warriors’ line to begin Salford’s comeback before claiming a loose ball and racing almost 90 metres to double his account in a fantastic solo effort. Dan Sarginson also played a key role with a crucial tackle on Wigan’s Bevan French with only a few minutes remaining.

England duo Luke Thompson and Tommy Makinson were both on the scoresheet for St Helens but couldn’t prevent Kristian Woolfe’s side falling to a 28-14 defeat to Castleford Tigers. Alex Walmsley provided the assist for prop-forward partner Thompson’s late score.

Paul McShane – who has been included in the list of potential England players for the first time – was voted as the Our League Player of the Match following another mammoth defensive effort tallying 40 tackles at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle. Liam Watts also featured in an impressive forward display.

Warrington Wolves hooker Daryl Clark came on from the interchange bench to notch two try-assists in the Wolves’ massive 4-38 victory over Hull FC. Stefan Ratchford, Chris Hill, Ben Currie, Josh Charnley and Mike Cooper all also featured for Warrington.

Wakefield Trinity were in Challenge Cup action edging out Championship opposition Bradford Bulls with Reece Lyne crossing for the match-winning try ten minutes from time.

England Knight candidates Sam Powell (Wigan Warriors) and Jake Trueman (Castleford Tigers) were both on the scoresheet this weekend while Toby King– of Warrington – provided two try-assists along with Danny Richardson (Castleford Tigers)and Danny Walker (Warrington Wolves) also setting up tries.
