It was another successful weekend for the various England players plying their trade Down Under with two of the ‘Canberra Crew’ crossing for tries in the Raiders’ 26-22 victory over Brisbane Broncos.
John Bateman and Ryan Sutton both went over for their first tries since joining Canberra in the off-season. Bateman managed to charge his way over from close-range while Sutton was quickest to react to a deflected kick which proved to be the difference between the sides.
Bateman was once again a standout performer for Canberra completing 50 defensive efforts and making 67 metres. Sutton made an impressive 109 metres - the second highest of the Raiders forwards – and 35 tackles.
Hooker Josh Hodgson put in an outstanding defensive display racking up 51 tackles, more than any other player on the field. Elliot Whitehead made 34 tackles as well as claiming an interception.

Sam Burgess displayed another robust performance in attack for South Sydney as they overcame Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, 6-14. Burgess – playing in the back-row – ran for 185 metres which was more than any other Rabbitoh and just one less than Canterbury’s Will Hopoate. A mammoth 67 of his metres came following contact.
George Burgess was also one of the biggest metre eaters on Friday making 135 from just 11 carries. Twin brother Thomas Burgess averaged a gain of ten metres per carry.
James Graham guided his St George Illawarra Dragons side to a fourth straight victory as they edged out Manly Sea Eagles, 12-10, at the WIN Stadium. The prop-forward made a huge 117 metres from his 12 carries with 35 of those coming post-contact. He also amounted 39 tackles with a brilliant 95.1% tackle efficiency.
Meanwhile, Ryan Hall is still waiting to return to action for the Sydney Roosters who currently sit level with Melbourne at the top of the NRL table following their Golden Point drop-goal victory over the Storm this past weekend.
Great first half from the boys. Wish I was more useful than a chocolate teapot so I could help out! @sydneyroosters— Ryan Hall (@Ryan5Hall) April 19, 2019
