Rugby League’s TACKLE IT campaign to feature on Hull KR’s Clive Sullivan-inspired warm-up shirt

Rugby League’s TACKLE IT campaign to feature on Hull KR’s Clive Sullivan-inspired warm-up shirt

Hull KR have unveiled a special warm-up shirt dedicated to the late, great Clive Sullivan MBE – incorporating a reference to Rugby League’s TACKLE IT anti-discrimination campaign.

Clive Sullivan MBE, born 9 April 1943 in Cardiff, became an icon in the City of Hull and one of a handful of people to play for both Hull KR and Hull FC, yet hold the respect of the whole City. Clive made over 300 appearances for Hull FC, before heading East to Hull KR, making over 200 appearances for the Robins and famously lifted the Challenge Cup in the 1980 Final against his old side, the Arlie Birds.

A Great Britain and Wales international winger, Clive made history when he became the first black captain of any national British sporting side, captaining Great Britain to become world champions in 1972.

When Sullivan died of cancer in 1985 aged just 42, he was held in such high regard that a main approach road to Hull (the A63) was renamed Clive Sullivan Way in his honour.

Paul Lakin, Hull KR Chief Executive is honoured the club can play its small part in celebrating Clive’s legacy: “We wanted to do something special to mark what would have been Clive’s 80th birthday and remember his significant achievements within the sport.

‘We presented to the players the shirt, Clive’s story and why it’s so special to our history. It’s important that those players who are not from the area, or who perhaps don’t understand what Clive achieved, are aware so they can wear the shirt with pride on gameday. It was fantastic to share that story, and have the Sullivan family join us for the morning to meet the team.

‘At the end of the season, we’ll ask the players to sign their warm-up shirt to sell, with the funds going to charities of the Sullivan families choice.

‘Of course, Clive represented both sides in the City with distinction, so it will have extra meaning to warm-up in the shirt at the Good Friday Derby, which is two days before his 80th Birthday.’

Designed in East Hull, and produced by Oxen, the design sports the most iconic and classic Hull KR look, with a simple red band on a white shirt and will be sponsored by Academics. It will be worn by the first team warming up for Super League fixtures at both home and away games.
