England Wheelchair v Ireland Preview

England Wheelchair v Ireland Preview

England Wheelchair have already secured their place in the semi-final, but they will be looking to end the group stages top with a perfect three from three record. Here is a closer look at England’s match against Ireland on Wednesday afternoon.

The Copper Box Arena will once again play host to another afternoon of wheelchair action.

Tom Coyd’s side came out on top after a strong defensive display against Australia in their opening match. Joe Coyd, Jack Brown and Nathan Collins all added braces during the 38-8 victory over Australia.

Jack Brown has been a key catalyst in the England side. The golden boot winner has scored four tries and has been a big part in the English attack during the opening two matches.

In the second match, Spain started well and shocked England. After eight minutes, England had a 12-10 advantage, however Coyd’s side asserted their dominance. England added an additional 92 points, which included five tries from Rob Hawkins and a hat-trick Dec Roberts.

Roberts could face his dad on Wednesday. Dec Roberts plays alongside his dad, Phil Roberts, for Wigan Warriors, however they will be in opposition as Phil represents Ireland.

Seb Bechara could return to the side; he was rested against Spain. Meanwhile, James Simpson made his first appearance in the 2021 World Cup, after he did not feature against Australia.

Ireland may not have won a game yet; however, they have been able to compete against two strong sides.

Captain, Peter Johnson crossed for an opening day hat-trick against Spain during their 55-32 defeat.

In their second match, Ireland faced a tough Australia side, who had given England a tough contest in the opening round.

Australia showed their quality as they came out with a 76-18 victory over Ireland.
