Report | New Zealand Maori 40-24 England Community Lions

Two tries in each half were not enough for the brave Community Lions as they went down to a spirited defeat in Rotorua.

A strong Maori side opened scoring through Geronimo Doyle who also converted his effort.

The Community Lions hit back and actually took a 12-6 lead with tries from Thatto Heath fullback Ben Heyes. Ryan Wilson (West Hull) goaled and was on target again following a smart finish from stand-off Karl Dixon (Wath Brow Hornets).

Prop Connor Purcell responded for the NZ Maoris with Doyle levelling the scores. Two tries from skipper Francis Ledger edged the game in the hosts favour to make it 22-12 at half-time.

Captain Fran King (Wath Brow Hornets) closed the deficit for England Community Lions with Wilson on target with the boot again but three more tries for the Maoris by Caleb Tohavan, Marcel Connal and Rangi Wyatt, all goaled by Doyle, who finished with a personal tally of sixteen points took the game away at 40-18.

The Lions had the final say however when Cumbrian speedster Curtis Teare (Wath Brow Hornets) went the full length of the pitch to score with Wilson adding his fourth goal.

Next up for the team is a game against New Zealand Residents in Auckland, which takes place on Friday, November 1.
