UNIVERSITY ROUND UP – PREMIER SOUTH
The only game played in the Premier South this week saw St Mary’s welcome Bath to Strawberry Hill after a recent two-month run without a match.
The home side had to soak up some pressure in the early stages of the match, but they soon showed their class as they went on to score a total of 13 unanswered tries and converted nine of them to earn a 70-0 win.
St Mary’s Dan Barnes got the opening try of the game, which also turned out to be the first of his hat-trick in this match as he went on to score twice in the second half. As a result of his superb performance, the hat-trick hero was awarded his side’s man-of-the-match.
Barnes said: “As a team we’ve been working hard to improve our structured play and it all came off in the game, this combined with some brave defending led us to the convincing win.”
Charlie Greene and Marcus Hockey also got two each, with the remaining six tries coming from Josh Robson, Eric Sims, Will Buckingham, Charlie Faux, Elis Staines and Nathaniel Vine. As well as his try, Staines also converted the nine successful attempts meaning he alone racked up 22 points.
Bath failed to put any points on the board but a strong performance from Sam Fraser saw him earn the man-of-the-match award for the visitors.
