Kingstone Press Championship Shield Round 2 wrap-up

A last minute James Glover penalty kicked from the half-way line, handed Dewsbury Rams a dramatic late 36-34 win over Toulouse Olympique XIII in the pick of this weekend’s matches.

First-half tries from Jode Sheriffe, Glover and Mickael Goudemand had handed the Rams a 18-14 half-time advantage. Paul Marcon, Stan Robin and Kuni Minga had all crossed for the visitors before the break.

Dom Speakman further extended Dewsbury’s lead on the 42nd minute however efforts from Gavin Marguerite and Marcon before the hour mark saw Toulouse go 28-24 up.

Robbie Ward’s converted effort on 67 minutes put the Rams ahead at 30-28 before Toulouse struck back through Bastien Canet on 72 minutes which put them back ahead in the to-and-fro tussle in West Yorkshire.

But then Toby Adamson went over for the Rams on 79 minutes to make it 34-34 but it appeared that Dewsbury had missed the chance to win when Paul Sykes fluffed his lines with the conversion.

However Glover snatched the win on the hooter with a mammoth penalty from 50 metres.

Batley Bulldogs closed the gap to Toulouse to six points after a 34-14 win at Batley Bulldogs.

Dave Scott and Alex Bretherton both scored twice for Matt Diskin’s side, with Shaun Ainscough and Jason Crookes also crossing. Jake Eccleston, Kevin Penny and Danny Yates scored for the Hornets.

Already-relegated Bradford Bulls put a dent in Oldham’s survival chances with a 20-16 win at Bower Fold.

The Bulls raced to a 20-0 lead within as many minutes after tries from Josh Rickett, Scott Moore, James Bentley and Cory Aston.

Oldham hit back to close to 20-16 after tries from Jack Spencer, Danny Grimshaw and Michael Ward but the Bulls managed to hold out for the final 32 minutes for their first win since June 25.

Swinton Lions also remain in the relegation mix after falling to a 30-32 defeat at home to Sheffield Eagles.

Ilias Bergal, Jack Murphy, Rob Lever (2) and Ben White crossed for Swinton. Ben Blackmore (2), Paddy Flynn (2), Menzie Yere and Elliot Minichella all scored for Sheffield.
